Maine Tips

Here are just a few of the wonderful places to visit in Maine:

For Lobster:  You can rarely go wrong with a simple steamed lobster and melted butter, but for a perfect Lobster Roll try:

Bob’s Clam Hut
Route One
Kittery, ME

For Beaches:

Ogunquit Beach- in Southern Maine, wonderful long sandy beach

Popham Beach, Phippsburg, ME- the most beautiful beach I’ve ever seen!

***************************************

For History Buffs:

Museums of Old York: Also known as Old York Historical Society – a group of eight historic buildings with an outstanding collection of decorative arts in York, Maine.

***************************************

For Art Lovers:

The George Marshall Store Gallery: In one of the historic buildings in York, Maine showing contemporary art of established and rising Maine and New England artists.  EAST HOPE cover artist, Tom Curry, has exhibited there.  See website for current shows.

The Ogunquit Museum of American Art: a small museum in an exquisite location overlooking the ocean and Perkins Cove.  Ogunquit, ME.

The Farnsworth Museum and Wyeth Center in Rockland, ME: a fine collection of American art and also the paintings of Andrew, N.C., and Jamie Wyeth.  See also the work of 20th century sculptor Louise Nevelson along with four new galleries of contemporary art.

For islands: There are too many to count in the great state of Maine, but for the essential island experience try:

Monhegan Island: Ten miles off the coast by ferry from Port Clyde, Boothbay Harbor, and New Harbor.  With a permanent population of no more than 65, there are no cars or paved roads on the island.  I’ve loved staying at The Island Inn –amazing views, a real Maine experience.  Think rocky coast, pine-scented woods, meadows of wild flowers.  The walks around  the island are breathtaking and once there, you feel away from it all.  Take sensible shoes for exploring.

Lunch stops to remember:

Chase’s Daily: emphasis on fresh local food, vegetarian menu that will convert meat eaters instantly.  Make a point of stopping here.
            96 Main St.
            Belfast, ME   207-338-0555.

Thomaston Café: offers great homemade soups and chowders, uses local ingredients.  As the French say “ça vaut le détour.” (worth a detour)
            154 Main St.
            Thomaston, ME 207-354-8589

The Starlight Café: in Bath, Maine.  Go on Thursday for the Thanksgiving sandwich of turkey, stuffing, and all the trimmings- delicious! While in Bath don’t miss the cooking store upstairs, an outstanding culinary emporium.  Also the Maine Maritime Museum, just a few minutes away on the way to Phippsburg.
            15 Lambard St.
            Bath, ME 207-443-3005
